A teacher has been stood down from a Burwood Jewish school after a slew of complaints by former students about “inappropriate conduct”.
In a statement on Thursday, Mount Scopus Memorial College principal Rabbi James Kennard said complaints had been made by a number of former students that a staff member had previously engaged in inappropriate conduct with secondary students.
“The college takes these complaints very seriously. We are taking any and all steps needed to understand the extent, and impact, of any such conduct on any current and former students,” he said.
The Herald Sun has been told the male teacher had taught at the school for about 20 years.
Rabbi Kennard said the type of conduct was wholly unacceptable and had no place in any school setting.
“Following an independent investigation, the staff member no longer works at the college, and we have reported these matters to all the relevant authorities.
“If you have had a similar experience, the College extends to you its complete support and assistance.
“We sincerely thank the brave former students who have brought these matters to our attention.”
