A MAN armed with box cutters was found inside Government House grounds overnight.

Police have confirmed the incident which is understood to have occurred while Governor of Victoria Linda Dessau was home.

The Herald Sun understands the offender was detected by security about 3am. They apprehended the man before police arrived.

A 40-year-old Capel Sound man has been charged with trespass.

He has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on July 31.

It comes almost a year after an intruder was arrested on the roof of Government House.

The offender had managed to get inside the building before being discovered by security.

The security breach sparked a major police operation to remove the man who was unarmed.
