Two men died in seperate road incidents in the early hours of Saturday morning, with police launching a search for a hit-run driver.

Police were called to a suspected hit-and-run on the Princes Hwy in Berwick about 12.15am after a passenger from a passing ride-share vehicle noticed a man in the gutter and raised the alarm.

The 44-year-old suffered catastrophic injuries, and was taken to hospital, but died later on Saturday.

Major Crash Investigation Unit detectives are investigating and believe a black BMW sedan hit the 44-year-old.

The car would likely have damage on its front wheel arch and to its front left headlight.

Just minutes after police arrived on the scene, a motorbike rider died on Johnson St in Abbotsford.

Investigators believe the rider lost control of his unregistered bike and crashed at high speed. The bike was not displaying registration plates.

The man is yet to be identified and police have urged anyone who might know him to come forward.

Also about midnight, police pulled over a high powered Trans-Am muscle car in Caulfield after spotting the perform burnouts. The car was also spotted at an estimated 150km/h.

The car was impounded for a month and the man is expected to be charged with a string of serious traffic offences.

The two overnight deaths bring the states road toll to 226, compared to 202 at the same time last year.
