Controversial Lego Masters contestant Kale Frost has opened up about the dark chapter behind his first name.

Frost, the most self-confident and talked-about competitor on Nine’s building blocks hit, told the Sunday Herald Sun that he had a tough childhood, and had changed his birth name.

“Kale wasn’t the name I was born with. I made the decision that I could either carry that forward for the rest of my life, or start anew and be the best person I could be.”

Frost added: “That was really the first step, OK, I’m going to adopt my own name,” he said.

“And this is before Kale became a superfood!

“It was symbolic of me trying to be a better person.”

Frost has sparked controversy on Lego Masters over his self-assured manner and claims he is not a team player.

The photographer and designer says his new-found confidence stems from a recent weight loss journey.

“Go back 12 months and I was four belt notches larger around the waist,” Frost said.

“I started a gym regimen, but it was more about keeping up with my son and being able to give him shoulder rides.

“I’m now down four belt notches and I’m in a committed 16-year relationship with the woman of my dreams. I don’t have tickets on myself. It’s more about feeling good about looking better.

“The singles best thing about it all is, my son is having shoulder rides again, and I can keep up with him.”

Frost denied claims he consistently ignores his Lego Masters Adam ‘Bilsy’ Bilsborough, and insists he’s a team player.

“This show is the first time Bilsy and I met,” he said. “There was tension. I’m not going to deny that.”

Frost paid tribute to Melbourne’s AFOL — Adult Fan of Lego — community for helping him through the dark days. “When I didn’t have a family, the Lego community was my family,” he said.

“They were warm, welcoming and helpful. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without their help and support.”

Lego Masters, a ratings smash for Nine, has been commissioned for a second season.
