Motorists travelling along the West Gate Bridge have been warned to brace for delays of up to an hour as lanes are closed between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve.
Department of Transport crews will add new asphalt surfaces and waterproofing in a bid to improve the bus corridor over the holiday period.
The works will shut down three of five city-bound lanes from 7pm on December 26 until 4pm on December 31.
An additional inbound lane will also be closed after 9pm over the same period.
More than 205,000 people drive over the bridge every day, with the improvements needed to strengthen the road and provide smoother journeys for drivers.
Motorists are urged to plan ahead and add up to an hour to travel times for city-bound traffic.
“We’re investing in the iconic West Gate Bridge to ensure it continues to safely meet the needs of our motorists,” Roads Minister Jaala Pulford said.
“I want to thank the hardworking staff in the Incident Response Team who travel thousands of kilometres a month to keep Melbourne moving.”
