Multimillion-dollar security works have been finalised at Government House following a security scare two years ago at the heritage-listed building.
The entire perimeter fence has been replaced and bollards installed as part of renovations to the 143-year-old building.
The changes were prompted by a shirtless man who scaled the roof and entered a secure area in May 2017.
Government House, located in Kings Domain, is home to Governor of Victoria Linda Dessau. Ms Dessau was not home at the time of the roof incident.
It comes as bidders are sought to repair the ballroom roof and paint and refurbish the flag tower, the latest steps in a renovation program that began seven years ago, a Department of Premier and Cabinet spokeswoman said.
The stormwater system for the Fountain Court outdoor area will also be restored.
“These works are the final stages of a roof replacement program that commenced in 2012-13. It is anticipated that the roof replacement program will be completed during 2019-20,’’ she said.
Previous works included the replacement of all slate and lead roofing, and relining of pipes which were installed during construction in 1876.
“Government House, like all significant heritage and community assets of the state, has an ongoing need for conservation, maintenance and repair.’’

A total of $16.8 million was provided in this year’s state budget for the maintenance and operation of Government House.
Further protection measures were undertaken at the heritage-listed house but no details were given.
“We are unable to comment specifically on security related matters.,’’ the spokeswoman said.
At the time of the intrusion two years ago, Premier Daniel Andrews flagged a $11.5 million security upgrade for important government buildings, including Government House.
