Shocking footage has captured at least 20 youths on dirt bikes recklessly swerving between cars and doing wheelies on the Tullamarine Fwy.

Appalling footage has emerged capturing dozens of young dirt bike riders swerving and performing wheelies amid heavy traffic, putting other drivers as well as their own lives at risk.

At least 20 youths were filmed riding erratically along the Tullamarine Fwy on Sunday evening just after 5pm before taking the Bulla Rd exit.

The youths were observed doing wheelies, standing up while their bikes were in motion and driving over a painted traffic island as several cars drove alongside the road, which had a speed limit of 80km p/h at the time.

The riders were seen wearing helmets while swerving through three lanes of traffic, however it’s understood no other safety gear was worn or number plates were displayed.

One motorist reported the riders were so close to her car, her vehicle’s blind spot sensors were going off.

Witnesses suggest the group was doing burnouts in Moonee Ponds prior to the incident, however this hasn’t been confirmed.

Victoria Police were called to the area after receiving multiple reports about the group.

“Police have been told motorcycle riders were seen driving erratically on the Tullamarine Freeway and surrounding area, including Bulla Road and Lincoln Road just after 5pm,” a spokesman said.

“Police patrolled the area and were not able to locate the riders.”

The video was taken just hours before a 17-year-old Hoppers Crossing boy and 18-year-old Altona Meadows woman died following a collision in Grangefields.

Investigators were informed two off-road motorbikes were being ridden on a private property on Beattys Rd when the collision occurred about 6.35pm.

Police were unable to catch up to the youths.

Two younger boys aged six and 11, were also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Meanwhile a 43-year-old Altona Meadows man – who is believed to be the father of one of the deceased – was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, after he lost control of a quadbike he was travelling on en route to the scene.

The two incidents are understood to not be related, with the latter incident occurring at a private property where a party was taking place.

The incidents come just months after Victoria Police announced it would crack down on hoons riding dirt bikes illegally on roads and parklands.

In June, Wyndham City council gifted Westgate Highway Patrol two off-road motorbikes so officers could patrol off-road areas to combat illegal trail bike riding and motorbike hooning.

Westgate Police Division Inspector Jennifer Horgan said last month the bikes would assist police with getting into off-road areas where offenders may “slip off” to while being pursued.

“Motorsports is a really great thing to be involved in legally, but if your kids are using their bikes on the road, that’s illegal. It’s dangerous and won’t be tolerated,” she said.
