Police seize dirt bikes used to taunt officers in dangerous ordeal

Police have nabbed three more teenagers who allegedly taunted highway patrol officers and performed wheelies on illegal dirt bikes in an ordeal they say could have ended in disaster.

Detectives say more arrests are imminent after they released shocking footage of a group of about 15 youths riding dirt bikes without a licence as they rode on the wrong side of the road, sped and flicked dirt onto two officers in Williams Landing in late July.

They charged one 14-year-old boy at the time over the “really dangerous” incident, during which the group of riders could be seen circling around the highway patrol officers on their bikes as they arrested another rider.

Three more 15-year-old boys were on Tuesday arrested after police from the Westgate Highway Patrol raided homes across Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Williamstown and seized their illegal and unregistered dirt bikes.

They each face a string of charges, including reckless conduct endangering serious injury, careless driving, unlicensed driving and improper use of a motor vehicle.

Westgate Police Division Inspector Jennifer Horgan said investigators were working tirelessly to track down the remaining riders from that incident, and anyone else who rode a dirt bike illegally.

“Westgate Highway Patrol is relentless in tracking down those who think they can

endanger our roads and get away with it,” she said.

“I’m urging parents to have a conversation with their children around the safe use of

bikes as riding them on our streets and through parks illegally is not okay.

“You might think it’s harmless fun but one day it could end in tragedy.”

The teens were bailed and will face a children’s court at a later date as police seek to confiscate their bikes permanently.
