A giant inflatable “fish” fountain will dominate Federation Square as part of a range of events and experiences planned over summer.
The popular destination has promised a “blockbuster” season of activities spanning live music, public art, interactive installations, films, exhibitions and workshops under the banner Kaleidosquare.
From January 21 to February 6, the square will be transformed into an interactive playground featuring the colourful Koi fish fountain by ENESS.
The inflatable fountain will be 5m high and surround the character Cupid “who cheekily squirts water”.
Free concerts will return to the main stage in 2022 featuring performances across summer by Grammy-nominated Australian jazz and funk band Hiatus Kaiyote, alt-pop artist Dylan J, songstress Bumpy, soul-pop artist AKOSIA, and Melbourne rock trio The Grogans.
A tribute to French electro house group Daft Punk will see DJ Andy Murphy and Daft Punk Discovery light up the stage on January 15.
Between January 15 and 26, the big screen will show classic film including Jaws, Jurassic Park, Muriel’s Wedding, Strictly Ballroom, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
On February 14, 18 and 26, classical musicians will perform tunes ranging from Bach to The Beatles in a series of free open-air concerts by candlelight.
Other highlights include a “mini silo art trail” involving making miniature wheat silos into artworks, and a large-scale bridge installation in The Atrium featuring “a raw and powerful” photo exhibition.
Fed Square chief executive Caroline Ralphsmith said the square will put on 160 free events over summer.
“There’s a real buzz around Fed Square’s restaurants, cafes, bars, cinemas and galleries that’s enticing people to rediscover the best of Melbourne,” she said.
“We are bringing iconic, colourful scenes from around Victoria to our doorstep to celebrate Victorian creativity and to continue to re-energise the heart of the city.”
