Future Melbourne: MCC members may access to creche, coffee, gyms or tennis

FUTURE Melburnians could use their MCC membership to put their kids in creche, pay for coffee, visit the gym or play tennis on courts used for the Australian Open.

FUTURE Melburnians could use their MCC membership to put their kids in creche, pay for coffee, visit the gym or play tennis on courts used for the Australian Open.

A new membership could allow footy, cricket and tennis fans to swipe into top-class events but also tap into shared community facilities built at the sporting precinct.

MCC chief executive Stephen Gough has proposed the membership shake-up as a potential way to breathe new life into Melbourne’s sporting heart and satisfy the recreational needs of our growing population.

“We could have a joint development between all of this precinct, which could have a membership offer to people that you’ve got tennis, you might have swimming, gymnasiums, walking tracks, a running track,’’ he said.

With long-mooted plans to cover railway yards between the MCG and the CBD gaining momentum, Mr Gough said that sports academies, club headquarters and fitness centres could also be added. Accommodation, education, sports management and medical centres could also be built above the railyards and offered to card holders under the plan.

“I don’t want to limit my thinking, but just think about sports-related uses that could happen that would benefit the community,’’ Mr Gough said.

He said the precinct needed to strike a better balance between professional, community and social competition and idle open spaces should be activated.

Mr Gough said sporting codes, the City of Melbourne and the State Government should determine how remaining open space could be best used by the masses.
