Weather explained: what kind of weather patterns lead to morning fog?

MELBOURNE has woken to a fog “as thick as pea soup” blanketing the northern and eastern suburbs.

The mist descended overnight and has caused traffic headaches and delays at Melbourne Airport.

A Qantas spokeswoman said some flights were experiencing issues with a lower arrival rate for the airport understood to be affecting all airlines.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said the fog was particularly strong in the north and east.

The fog is expected to clear this morning with a top of 16C predicted and a chance of a light shower this evening.

VicTraffic described the visibility as being “as thick as pea soup out there this morning.”

“Limited visibility across Melbourne needs extra caution. If you’ve got Fog Lights, now is the time to use them,” they tweeted.

Meanwhile, there are major delays on the Cranbourne and Pakenham train lines after overnight level crossing removal works ran into overtime.

Metro Trains has advised commuters to consider alternative transport.
