Police flooded the area after emergency crews were called to revive the woman about 3.45am and witnesses reported a man had fled the scene.

A 39-year-old man was found shortly before midday with self-inflicted wounds.

He was taken to hospital and was expected to be questioned by homicide detectives after treatment.

The man was known to the victim.

Neighbours grieving the loss of the woman, who has teen and adult children, spoke of their shock.

“She’d give you the shirt off her back, she’d feed you if you were needing a feed, she’d get you money if you needed money, anything,” Kim Barns told the ABC.

“The whole community is going to feel the loss of this lady, because she was really an intricate part of Maryborough, she’d lived here all her life.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
