A multimillion-dollar Hawthorn East mansion has been destroyed by a blaze that took fire crews more than 90 minutes to bring under control.
One woman was inside the Bluff St home when the flames took hold about 2.15pm.
She managed to escape uninjured, a Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said.
Flames quickly spread through the roof and seven fire trucks, including an aerial teleboom, were called in to bring it under control by 3.50pm.
Firefighters used breathing apparatuses to wade in through thick plumes of smoke to tackle the fire.
It caused extensive damage to the single-storey brick mansion that sold for $2.9m in 2014.
MFB fire investigators arrived at the house on Monday night and will return on Tuesday morning to probe the cause of the blaze, which is still unknown.
