It’s just 41 days until the big fella in the red suit loads up his sleigh for another year of Christmas cheer and goodwill.
And in Melbourne, it’s already beginning to feel a bit like Christmas with the launch of the city’s Yuletide festival.
Red and white and green decorations are coming out of storage, there’s the promise of a Paul Kelly singalong and the 16m Christmas tree will be lit up at the end of the month.
Santa’s city ambassador, Lord Mayor Sally Capp, promised the Christmas Festival would be bigger and better than ever.
“From our new 8m-tall reindeer at Docklands, to our new program of free outdoor Christmas movies and a host of spectacular decorations adorning our streets, there is something for everyone to enjoy this festive season,” Cr Capp said.
Favourites include the Christmas Projections, narrated this year by Lee Lin Chin, Santa’s House, the giant Christmas Bauble and the Gingerbread Village by Epicure.
On December 21, a singalong of the Paul Kelly Christmas classic Making Gravy will be held at Federation Square.
A free outdoor cinema will be set up in Argyle Square, Carlton, every Saturday from November 30.
It will be screening festive favourites such as The Muppets’ Christmas Carol, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Holiday and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Also new this year is the Christmas Collective initiative, a series of markets, masterclasses and pop-up events, such as a silent disco.
