Fence where Tim Smith crashed his car in October 2021 is being fixed

The Hawthorn fence where former Kew MP Tim Smith smashed his Jaguar while drink driving is being repaired after a long “standoff”.

The fence that crushed the career of former Kew MP Tim Smith is finally being repaired.

The Herald Sun can reveal that almost 18 months after Smith crashed his car into the Hawthorn property while drunk, it is being fixed.

Mr Smith crashed his Jaguar into the property after having “too many” wines and recording a BAC of .131.

The fence sat untouched for more than a year amid a “standoff” between Mr Smith and family of the home over how much he owed.

In a statement issued shortly after the October 2021 crash Mr Smith said he had been at a dinner with friends and didn’t think he was over the limit.

He later said he had just “a couple” of wines before later admitting he had “quite a few glasses of wine”.

Mr Smith later said on the night of the accident he had been told by former state minister Jane Garrett that her cancer had returned.

He described the Labor MP as his “best friend” who he met at the age of 25 when tackling the “bongo players” in the Greens party.

Mr Smith said this was not to excuse himself from his behaviour but that he knew then he would potentially never see her again “and I didn’t”.

He has not ruled out a return to parliament, and says he still harbours hopes of a career in politics.
