A man has been remanded in custody after facing court for the murder of a man in Endeavour Hills.
Police were called to Mossgiel Park Accommodation on Monteith Crescent following the discovery of a body about 9.40am on Sunday, February 26.
Jamefil Wal, 38, faced the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning for a brief filing hearing.
Mr Wal was remanded in custody and no application for bail was made, and will next face court for a committal mention on July 3.
The court heard he had no custody management issues, except that he would need a translator for his next appearance.
“An Arabic interpreter will be needed on the next occasion,” his lawyer told the court.
The property is a halfway house that receives referrals from local homeless support agencies.
A neighbour said she heard a disturbance in the early hours of the morning.
“I heard repeated bangs on a door,” Marg Fernandopulle said.
“I heard someone screaming and shouting.
“It’s been happening often (the screaming and shouting). I didn’t hear clearly what the words were, however.”
Ms Fernandopulle said she was “angry” the home had recently attracted trouble.
“It is awful, we are not very happy about the accommodation being so close.
“This is a quiet, residential area.”
Another neighbour said she heard a group of men swearing overnight.
“There was a lot of language and swearing,” neighbour Carolyn, surname withheld, said.
“At 5am there was someone out talking in the street, that’s when I knew something was up. I didn’t want to involve myself.”
Carolyn said “a lot of police” officers had come and gone during the day.
“It’s not unusual for there to be things going on at that accommodation,” she said.
“It is surprising it doesn’t happen more, to be honest.”
Nearby resident Robert Mutch said the area was rough and that people often “come and go” from the crisis accommodation near his home.
“There’s always cops and whatnot parked towards the entry to the entry of that estate,” he said.
“The (residents) come and go from the place if you know what I mean.
“I’m a bit surprised.”
In 2021, 39-year-old Adam Russell was allegedly stabbed to death in the doorway of the accommodation.
His neighbour, a 55-year-old man, was charged at the time of the alleged stabbing.
