Victorian MP questioned over sexual assault allegations

Dumped Labor MP Will Fowles has formally quit the party, blasting the administration in the wake of sexual assault allegations.

The Herald Sun can reveal Mr Fowles resigned as a member of the Australian Labor Party in August this year.

It comes after he was booted from the parliamentary Labor Party in August last year by former Premier Daniel Andrews following allegations of a serious assault on a government employee.

The alleged victim, a former Victorian political staffer who broke her silence in an exclusive interview with the Herald Sun this year, claimed she was attacked in a taxpayer-funded room at the five-star Le Meridien hotel on Bourke St.

Mr Fowles has always vehemently denied the claims.

Mr Fowles was arrested and interviewed, but following an investigation police did not lay any charges and on January 30, announced the case had been closed.

He returned to parliament in February but hasn’t turned up for every sitting week.

It can now be revealed that Mr Fowles is no longer a member of the ALP.

In a statement to the Herald Sun on Wednesday afternoon, Mr Fowles hit out at the party’s handling of the allegation.

“I confirm that two months ago I resigned my membership of the Australian Labor Party,” he said.

“The party I joined in 1999 respected the rule of law, due process and the presumption of innocence.

“Sadly, that is no longer the case.”

Despite no police charges, Premier Jacinta Allan said Mr Fowles would not be welcomed back to her caucus.

“The wellbeing of staff and their right to a safe workplace is not negotiable and we will always act on any allegations of a serious nature,” she said in January.

“The Member for Ringwood was asked to resign from the Parliamentary Labor Party in August last year. He will not return.”
