He’s earned a bronze statue and generated chatter of a New York posting – but Daniel Andrews has confirmed he will serve out his full four-year term.

Daniel Andrews has shut down speculation that he is planning an early political exit, confirming he’ll serve out the full four-year term.

The Premier first made the commitment prior to his election win last November, but there has since been mounting speculation in recent weeks that he could be on the way out.

It follows bubbling rumours which claimed Mr Andrews could be headed to New York, although other insiders have suggested he was happy in Melbourne.

Asked on Thursday whether he could reassure Victorians that he would commit to remaining Premier until the 2026 vote, Mr Andrews said: “Absolutely.”

“I am honoured to have been chosen on three occasions now to lead this state,” he added.

“As you all very well know, but may not report very often, I work seven days a week. The phone is always on.

“We’re always working hard to deliver our positive plan. That hasn’t changed and it won’t change.

“I have a great team around me. They all work really hard. It is a team and I’m very proud of them and all that we’ve achieved. As much as we’ve done, there’s a lot more to do. I’m focused on getting it done.”

Mr Andrews in February served his 3000th day as Premier of Victoria, making him eligible for a statue – which he is yet to confirm he’ll accept.

He recently passed John Cain for days served in the job, and will soon overtake Sir Rupert Hamer, who held office for 3208 days.

Mr Andrews on Thursday said speculation about his early retirement was just “gossip”.

“There’s been a story or two in some gossip columns. Do I really need to tell you that gossip shouldn’t be believed?

“I serve with the pleasure of my colleagues and the Victorian community, and I’m about getting things done.”
