A hangry customer has lost the plot in a Melbourne Subway store, frightening away lunchtime diners in an explosive tantrum over music.

After becoming enraged when sandwich-making staff asked him to repeat elements of his order at 12.30pm, the middle-aged man began screaming at them to turn the store’s music down.

Over the course of several minutes, the lunchtime meltdown continued as the man loudly abused young female staff members at the packed Elizabeth St store, until he completely lost control when finalising his order and paying.

“I asked you several times to turn the music off,” the customer screamed at one staff member.

“I am endlessly repeating my order to you stupid people because you want this music on.”

Throughout the ordeal the young woman serving the man remained calm and did not abuse him back, instead attempting to calm him while asking him to leave the store.

“I won’t be coming back to this store, I will go to the Collins St store next time … I know exactly where it is,” the man shouted back at her.

But despite being asked to leave, the man continued to place his order by shouting out his demands for cookies.

“I want one chocolate chip cookie and one raspberry cheesecake cookie. And a drink,” he screamed.

When the staff member was unable to understand his shouting demands, the customer became violent, repeatedly slamming his hand on the counter and screaming at the top of his voice: “What is so hard about serving someone?”

The man flew into a rage over the music. But it didn’t stop him ordering cookies.

As a crowd gathered in Elizabeth St to watch through the store’s windows, they were joined by diners who quickly fled the store to get away from the man.

After the distressed staff member warned the man she was calling police, the outraged customer told her she should, but then proceeded to pay for his order.

Rather than calling police, the calm but shaken Subway staff member accepted his payment and promptly apologised to other customers waiting in line for the disturbance.

The angry customer was last seen eating his foot-long as he crossed the road to Flinders St Station.
