How will coronavirus end?

Chinese students at prestigious Peninsula Grammar will return to classes on Monday after being quarantined in the school’s boarding house for the past fortnight, amid coronavirus fears.

About 40 international students — the vast majority of them Chinese nationals — have been kept isolated from the rest of the school community for the past 15 days.

Principal Stuart Johnston told the Sunday Herald Sun all of the students were in good health and had been medically cleared to return to normal classes this week.

The decision to quarantine international students returning from China — and students who had passed through Chinese airports — had been made in line with Department of Health coronavirus guidelines, he said.

Peninsula Grammar had a large population of Chinese students, so their quarantine had been “a challenging period” for the school, Mr Johnston said.

The students’ education had continued throughout their quarantine period via a digital learning platform, he said.

The school’s coronavirus policies and procedures applied to all students, not just the international cohort, Mr Johnston stressed.

A letter sent to Peninsula Grammar families on Friday said the school continued to monitor developments around coronavirus, and to date there had been no Peninsula Grammar students or families infected with the disease.

“In line with Health Department advice, the school maintains its current policy requesting any persons that have recently travelled to China or via its airports, please refrain from attending the school premises or grounds until they have been in the country for at least two weeks,” the letter from Mr Johnston reads.

“This provision also applies to our international cohort upon their arrival to the school.”

He told the Sunday Herald Sun Chinese students who had returned to school after their summer break had been placed in quarantine.
