Coronavirus: Why the Diamond Princess cruise ship is a worst-case scenario

A mum and dad from Melbourne have been diagnosed with coronavirus as their infected daughter marked her 21st birthday in a Japanese hospital.

Bianca D’Silva, from Sydenham, celebrated her milestone with pizza.

But with parents Suzanne and Dellone now also battling coronavirus they have been confined to their own hospital rooms.

They fear 14-year-old son Brenton, who has asthma, may too fall ill.

“I am just worried for mum and dad,’’ Bianca told the Sunday Herald Sun.

“They are getting it a bit worse because they are older than me.

“We are just taking it a day at a time.”

The family, cruising on the Diamond Princess when they got sick, had planned a big party back in Melbourne to mark Bianca’s birthday.

“Everyone has been messaging me and have been calling,’’ Bianca said.

“I am keeping myself busy talking to everybody.

“When I come back I will have an even bigger party.”

Ms D’Silva said she and her husband had both developed pneumonia and were short of breath.

Mr D’Silva has been put on a course of drugs in a bid to combat the virus.

“He is a pretty strong man so when he gets sick it’s pretty bad,’’ Ms D’Silva said.

“It has just been one nightmare after another.

“Even a nightmare is not as bad as this.

“Just when you think you are OK something happens.

“It’s all up and down.

“My son is OK — we have been trying to keep him away from us.

“We are just keeping our fingers crossed.”

Medical staff ordered two pizzas for Bianca’s birthday.

“We just wished her a happy birthday and had some pizza alone in our rooms,’’ Ms D’Silva said.

“We had such a nice party planned for her today.

“Everyone took time off — all our family and friends. They are all getting together now and we are just sitting over here.

“We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“I just feel sad for those elderly people on that ship still.”
