A woman has been charged with the alleged unprovoked attack on two Chinese students, as the University of Melbourne backs a fundraiser to support the victims.
Academics launched an online fundraiser to pay for the medical bills of the two students, who were allegedly verbally abused then set upon by two women on Elizabeth St last Wednesday at 5.30pm.
Footage of the incident shows one of the victims allegedly being punched, kicked and dragged to the ground before bystanders intervene.
One of the students had her Airpod headphones stolen by a man who was at the scene but not involved in the alleged assault.
The two female victims suffered minor injuries.
More than $1000 has been raised and will help the students’ pay for medical costs, transport and replacing stolen items.
Dr Jay Song, a senior lecturer at the university’s Asia Institute, said the students were recovering from the traumatic attack.
“The students are absolutely grateful and overwhelmed with the support and case they’ve received. They’re coping well and trying to recover from the trauma and go back to their studies,” she wrote.
“We hope violence based on racial prejudices does not happen again, especially in this difficult time. We need to help each other and support each other.”
Police charged the 21-year-old Melbourne woman yesterday with recklessly causing injury and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
Police are still searching for another man and a second female suspect, described as caucasian, about 20 years old with a skinny build, blonde shoulder-length hair and who was wearing a pink jacket at the time of the incident.
Police are also searching for a caucasian male with a solid build and approximately 175cm tall, who was at the time wearing a black puffer jacket and a black backpack.
Police released images of the women and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on crimestoppersvic.com.au
