MELBURNIANS shivered through the coldest morning of the year as winter announced its arrival around the state.
The mercury dropped to 4C in the city, down to 1C in Scoresby and as low as -1C in the Yarra Valley.

It was the coldest morning since last September, despite the Bureau of Meteorology’s long-term forecast announcing a warm and dry start to the season.
Bureau senior forecaster Rod Dixon said Melburnians could expect sunshine and a top of 15C today, with more cool nights this weekend.
“It’s a cold start this morning,” he said.
“Sunny day today and then cold mornings and mostly sunny days for the weekend.
“Apart from a slight chance of a shower on Monday, there won’t be any rain until the end of the week.”
Temperatures should reach the mid teens over the weekend, before heating up midweek.
Wangaratta and Rutherglen in the state’s northeast had the coldest morning away from the Alps, plunging to -2C.
Hotham dropped to -6C overnight, Falls to -5C and Mt Buller to -4C.
