A young girl has made a miraculous escape after a car veered off a busy freeway, crashed into a tree and burst into flames.
It is believed the vehicle was travelling outbound on the Monash Freeway in Endeavour Hills when the driver lost control before the Heatherton Road off-ramp about 1.20pm.
It left the road and crashed into a tree before bursting into flames.
The male driver, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
A primary school aged female passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
She has been taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious condition with a leg injury.

A police officer at the scene said it was too early to determine the cause of the crash, but that speed was a factor.
“A car doesn’t end up in this condition without speed being a factor,” he said.
Police were still working to determine the cause of the single car collision, but said it could even be a medical episode.
Tracks in the tall grass where the black sedan careened off the off ramp of the Monash were still visible as the vehicle was taken away by a tow truck.
Police have also praised the actions of passers by who witnessed the crash and stopped to assist the girl and got her out of the car.
Anyone with dash cam vision who was driving along the Monash at about 1.20pm is being asked to contact police.
The Heatherton Rd off-ramp remains closed and is expected to remain inaccessible to motorists for a number of hours.
A Department of Transport spokesman said traffic was still flowing well on the busy freeway.
This fatality takes this year’s lives lost to 36 compared to 41 this time last year.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
