A distinctive car with stolen plates that smashed through a residential street, leaving a man fighting for life, was seen speeding before the crash.
The blue Subaru Impreza with a red passenger side door is understood to have been seen speeding through the eastern suburbs in the early hours of the morning.
The car later wreaked havoc on Grange Rd, near Glen Huntley Primary, smashing into a parked car and careering into the brick fence of an apartment block at about 5am.
A neighbour rushed out to help, finding a man trying to help another man with extensive head injuries out of the driver’s seat.
The injured man, 39, is at the Alfred hospital with life threatening injuries while the other man fled the scene when police arrived.
“We’d be certainly asking for that person who left the scene to contact police and advise us of what he’s aware of in relation to the identity of the driver and his involvement,” said Detective Acting Sgt Cameron Merrett of the Major Collision Investigation Unit.
The Subaru Impreza was fitted with stolen licence plates from QLD.
Det Acting Sgt Merrett said police were looking at whether drugs, alcohol or speed were a factor in the crash.
Police are appealing to anyone who saw the car, has dashcam or CCTV footage, or knows the men to contact them.
