CELEBRITY vet Chris Brown says all Australians should be able to have pets in their homes and wants other states to follow Victoria in making it easier for renters to have pets.

CELEBRITY vet Chris Brown is urging other states to follow Victoria and make it easier for renters to have pets.

Surrounded by furry friends in Melbourne, Brown backed the rental property changes proposed by the Andrews Government, which will make landlords need reasonable grounds to reject tenants with animals.

The move is expected to impact hundreds of thousands of Victorians who struggle finding accommodation allowing them to keep their cats and dogs.

“Australia is a nation of animal lovers, but our pets deserve a place in our homes as well as our hearts,” Brown said.

“If you are a responsible pet owner and you do the right thing and want to incorporate a pet into your life this policy does that.

“In the future it should be a little bit easier and practical … I know a lot of people out there struggle to find accommodation where they can have a pet.”

The changes are part of a suite of new rental laws announced last year, aimed at the growing population of renters who are most likely to never own their own home.

“No one should have to choose between the pet they love and a place to live — our reforms will end this discrimination,” Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford said.

“We are making Victoria pet friendly.”

Ms Pulford also launched the Better For Pets Campaign, which will include awareness programs, fact sheets and online advertisements on how to better care for our animals.
