Big Brother star Danny Hayes records man going berserk in Victorian hotel quarantine and police threat

A police officer is alleged to have threatened to ‘gas’ a man having a meltdown in a Melbourne quarantine hotel, in a conflict recorded by a Big Brother star.

A police officer is alleged to have threatened a man going berserk in a Richmond Covid-19 quarantine hotel that he would be “f---ing gassed” if he did not calm down and return to his room.

The disturbing verbal exchange was caught on a video posted to YouTube by Big Brother star Danny Hayes.

Covid-19 Quarantine Victoria has confirmed police were involved in an incident with a resident at the Element Hotel on Saturday.

Police from Operation Tidewatch, based at a Richmond hotel, this morning responded to a report of a man who was subject to quarantine acting erratically and in a threatening manner.

The 19-year-old Stawell man was subsequently arrested for criminal damage to a room at the hotel, which is currently being utilised as a quarantine facility.

He was subject to a 14-day detention notice which was due to expire at midnight tonight and has returned a negative day-14 Covid test.

The man was subsequently conveyed to Melbourne West Police Station.

He remains in police custody and is currently being interviewed in relation to criminal damage offences.

The video by Hayes, who is also in quarantine at the Element hotel in Richmond, has provided a shocking insight into the breaking point some people are reaching while in hotel quarantine in Victoria.

It is understood the man who smashed up his room was enraged after he thought he was leaving the quarantine property at noon on Saturday.

He was, in fact, supposed to leave at 11.59pm that night.

A Covid-19 Quarantine Victoria spokesperson confirmed there had been an incident at the Richmond hotel on Saturday.

“CQV and Alfred Health are supporting residents and staff at the Complex Care Hotel in Richmond following an incident involving challenging resident behaviour,” the spokesperson said.

“Victoria Police officers, who are based on site at the hotel, quickly responded to the incident and there were no injuries.

“The resident involved is no longer in hotel quarantine.”

Hayes has also been warned about opening his hotel door and not wearing a mask.

“CQV Authorised Officers have also spoken to another resident over an IPC breach, after he filmed himself opening their door multiple times during the incident,” the spokesperson said.

Hayes, a real estate agent from Geelong who is quarantining in Melbourne after filming Big Brother VIP in Sydney last month, posted the video on YouTube on Saturday after hearing a man in the hotel room next to his having a meltdown and being threatened with being gassed if he didn’t calm down.

The five-and-half minute video sees Hayes in his hotel room while a distressed, very angry man can be heard yelling loudly at hotel security. No one other than Hayes appears in the video.

“Calm down or you are going to get f--ing gassed,” an authoritative voice is heard saying to the angry unidentified male.

“F--ing do it then,” the man replies.

He is also heard saying: “I am not f--ing staying here tonight.”

The authoritative voice tells him: “Move your bag, close the door, don’t f--ing come out again.”

Sounds of banging and smashing and punching walls can clearly be heard as well as what sounds like furniture being broken.

Speaking to his camera phone, Hayes relayed what he had heard the distressed individual say.

“He is saying he wants to go somewhere where the walls won’t cave in, poor guy,” Hayes said.

“I feel for these guys, this is sh-t. This is hotel quarantine.

“He is saying he doesn’t even have a crossword to do.”

“This is totally sh-t. Poor guy. People go crazy in hotel quarantine. I relate to it big time.”

When contacted Hayes confirmed the video had been recorded on Saturday morning and revealed it was the second time he had heard someone having a major meltdown on his hotel floor.

Hayes has been a vocal critic of the hotel quarantine system, questioning after nine negative Covid tests why he couldn’t be granted permission to do his 14 day quarantine at home in Geelong.
