Not only is a hit-run victim recovering from serious injuries in hospital, he is also dealing with the devastating loss of his beloved dog.

A 44-year old Footscray father-of-three was waiting at a set of traffic lights with family groodle, Romsey, on Ballarat Rd in Footscray on November 10 when they were struck by a car.

The car ploughed into the front of a nearby shop about 8.30pm and four occupants allegedly fled the scene.

While Romsey initially survived and was taken to a veterinary hospital, he sadly died a few days later.

“Despite outstanding care from the Animal Referral Hospital in Essendon, Romsey died a few days later,” Kelly Berry, the man’s sister-in-law, wrote.

“Romsey was a cherished member of the family, and they are devastated by his death.

“While (he) is expected to make a full recovery, he suffered significant injuries including multiple fractures, which will require extensive rehabilitation and adjustment before he is able to come home to his partner and their three young children.

“They have been overwhelmed by the messages of love, goodwill and support from their family and friends, work colleagues and caring people in the community.

Ms Berry has set-up a GoFundMe page in response to “many generous offers of support”.

“The family would like to extend their gratitude to the witness who drove Romsey to the vet hospital,” she said.

“They are comforted in knowing that their beloved Romsey was not left to die alone.

“The family would also like to sincerely thank the many caring staff at the vet hospital who tried everything they could to save his life.”

More than $6000 has already been raised since the page was set-up on the weekend.

A 48-year-old Footscray man and 27-year-old Footscray woman were arrested the following day after the incident, while two other people remain on the run.

A red 2008 Ford Modeo sedan has been identified as the car involved in the hit-run.
