A male pedestrian was allegedly left for dead after he was hit by a car last night in Melbourne’s inner west.

The 44-year old Footscray man was waiting at a set of traffic lights with his dog on Ballarat Rd in Footscray when they were struck by a car.

The car ploughed into the front of a nearby shop about 8.30pm and four occupants allegedly fled the scene.

Witness Leo saw the incident unfold.

“We were at the traffic lights and we heard a big bang, and then people running in all directions,” he told the Herald Sun.

“A car had struck a man. The driver ran a red light.

The shop has been boarded up following the incident.

“It was like a big bomb. It was like, ‘what the hell just happened.’

“People were running everywhere.

“The man was on the bonnet of the car, he got dragged, he was stuck between the car and the shop.

“He was critical and everybody called the ambulance, they got there so quickly.

“A group of four fled the scene, they were African in appearance.”

Leo came across an injured labradoodle dog.

“I wrapped the dog in a blanket, he wasn’t in the best condition. He was the most beautiful little thing,” witness Leo said.

“The owner asked me what happened, he didn’t know where he was.

“I said, ‘it is ok, we will take him to the vet’ and we did.”

The brown Labradoodle was taken to a veterinary clinic and is in a stable but critical condition.

The man remains in a serious condition.
