A learner driver accused of killing her sister in a horror hit-run has pleaded guilty to a far lesser charge in a deal with prosecutors.
Asyai Luk, 24, was originally charged with dangerous driving causing the death of her older sister after it was alleged she kicked Anong Luk out of a car following a fight in Sunshine on November 7, 2022.
Police at the time said Asyai, behind the wheel, took off down High St as her sister Anong tried to get back in the car.
She was dragged until her head struck the tow bar of a Jeep parked nearby and suffered fatal injuries.
But in the County Court on Tuesday, Asyai pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of careless driving and being a Learner driver without a supervisor.
Careless driving can be dealt with by way of a fine or the loss of demerit points, while dangerous driving causing death carries up to 10 years jail time.
Defence lawyer George Balot described the discontinuance by the prosecution of the other charges as “a phenomenal relief for the family”.
“This matter’s been weighing very heavily on the family and my client,” he told Judge Kellie Blair.
On the day of the crash, Asyai was arrested five hours later at her Brookfield home, claiming she did not know her sister had been injured.
Anong, a 24-year-old aspiring lawyer, later died in the hospital.
Mr Balot said Asyai did have a “road safety history”, with her priors to be recorded next time she appears in court.
Her bail was extended, to return to the County Court for a pre-sentence hearing on August 5.
