An “ultra-modern” hotel made mainly from timber is being built in Southbank.
The Adina Apartment Hotel will have 220 rooms, including 70 studio-style hotel rooms.
In what’s billed as the nation’s first cross-laminated timber hotel, 10 floors of accommodation is being constructed above an existing concrete building.
Cross-laminated timber is touted as non-toxic, fire resistant and very strong compared to common building materials.
Julian Anderson, from architects Bates Smart, said that 5300 tonnes of the timber was used in construction, offsetting about 4200 tonnes of carbon emissions.
“In addition to reduced emissions, cross-laminated timber incorporates several sustainability benefits, including lower transport costs and time saving advantages from off-site manufacturing,” he said.
“It also presents a more sustainable approach to increasing density within our cities.”
The hotel, on the corner of Southbank Blvd and City Rd, will feature a lap pool, gym, meeting spaces and kitchens and laundries.
TFE Hotels spokesman Chris Sedgwick said the architects had taken into account the way the existing building “turned the corner”.
“By incorporating a glass curtain facade and vast curved balcony, they’ve reshaped Melbourne’s skyline south of the Yarra,” he said.
