On Monday, city-bound traffic was banked up for several kilometres after the man was hit on the inbound lanes near Point Cook Rd in southwest Melbourne just before 5.30am.
All inbound lanes reopened just before 10am, easing lengthy delays on the freeway and surrounding roads.
It comes after drivers described their commutes from hell, including one man who moved just 100m in 15 minutes at Hoppers Crossing.
“In the last 15 minutes I’ve travelled between one lamp post and the next,” he told 3AW.
“You can’t go down any of the side streets because they’re all just banked right up as well, trying to get onto the main from about 7 or 8km from the freeway.”
Another driver told the radio station drivers were “being really kind to each other on the road”.
“Letting you move over when you have to move over,” she said.
Vic Roads’ Chris Miller earlier suggested some alternative travel routes for those stuck in traffic.
“Getting out of Hoppers Crossing and Williams Landing is a real struggle,” Mr Miller told 3AW.
He added drivers coming out of Werribee or Hoppers Crossing should use Tarneit Rd and head north, or take Leakes Rd.
“On the southern side of the freeway, coming out of Seabrook and Point Cook, the only real way to get out of there is (to) head through Altona,” Mr Miller said.
“If you can defer your travel … that would be the rest thing to do.”
Anyone with information on the crash or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
