$225 million Marvel Stadium plan unveiled

Striking new plans for the AFL-owned Marvel Stadium have been revealed and it’s set to be a big win for footy fans. Here’s an exclusive look at the head-turning designs.

Marvel Stadium will be opened up to the city and made more appealing to the public in a $225 million plan to be unveiled on Friday.

A new “Town Square’’ will be developed outside the Docklands stadium and new cafes, restaurants and bars added in a bid to lure people to the precinct all year-round.

Striking new plans for the AFL-owned venue, obtained by the Herald Sun, reveal a “city edge” stadium extension with revamped public and function areas boasting CBD views over Wurundjeri Way.

The new Town Square plaza will be built near the Bourke St footbridge from Southern Cross Station, combining indoor and outdoor spaces and hosting community markets and public events.

The revamp is set to be a big win for fans.

Some stadium walls will also be removed to provide a better view of on-field action.

Work is expected to start next year and create hundreds of jobs.

And new video screens, technology upgrades and food and beverage area renovations will be built inside the stadium.

Sports Minister Martin Pakula said the project, designed by architects Grimshaw with Smartform, would go to construction tender next week.

“This project will turn Marvel Stadium into a true community asset – a fantastic place to watch the footy or catch a big act but also a place to gather and enjoy being part of Melbourne,’’ he said.

Food and beverage area renovations will be built inside the stadium.

“It’s a win for sports fans, for people who will come to the precinct to meet family and friends and for the hundreds of workers who will draw a wage working on another major stimulus project for Victoria.”

The government committed $225 million to the project in 2018 as part of a deal to see the Grand Final played at the MCG til at least 2058 and lock in AFL matches at Geelong and Ballarat.

The redevelopment will also see improved lighting and bike parking and male and female change room upgrades.

The outside will also get a revamp.

The town square is expected to be the last part of redevelopment.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said it was a win for spectators and Victorians.

“By renovating the existing Marvel Stadium structure, it will provide a more environmentally sustainable way of building as well as ensuring minimal disruption to fans,’’ he said.

Initial drawings released by the AFL two years ago ­included improved grandstands, a running track and 1500-seat ballroom to host major events such as the Brownlow Medal.

Docklands, 20 years on.

But the AFL parted ways with the chief architect of those plans and went back to the drawing board to create the blueprint expected to be unveiled by Mr McLachlan on Friday.

The town square is expected to be the last part of redevelopment of the 20 year old stadium, likely to be completed in 2023.

A town planning permit application will be lodged with the City of Melbourne.
