Tragedy as one-year-old girl dies after being hit by car in Ocean Grove

The Ocean Grove community is “in shock” after the death of a one-year-old girl who was struck by a car outside her family home.

Family and friends have rallied behind a young family whose baby girl was tragically killed after being struck by a car outside their Ocean Grove home on Friday.

The one-year-old girl was accidentally hit by the car, driven by her mother, in the driveway of the Connewarre Pl property on Friday afternoon.

The tot tragically died at the scene despite paramedics’ attempts to revive her.

The parents of the baby were being supported by loved ones on Saturday as they came to terms with their devastating loss, with several friends gathering at their home throughout the morning and afternoon.

Well-known in the local community, the family are understood to be members of Ocean Grove-based Baptist church, The Wave.

The quiet laneway, where the accident unfolded on Friday, was open on Saturday after police finished examining the scene.

One local resident said the young family had been left “in pieces” after the tragic death.

“Everyone here is in shock,” he said. “It’s still very raw — just heartbreaking.”

Police confirmed they will prepare a report on the tragedy for the coroner.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or dashcam footage is asked to contact Crime Stoppers,” a police spokeswoman said on Saturday.

More than a dozen police officers and three ambulances responded on Friday afternoon, with some first responders comforting shocked onlookers.

“(A woman) collapsed, she was grief stricken and was being consoled by a man and ambulance officers,” a witness said.

“The street was packed with lots of neighbours milling around, everyone looking on in shock.”
