An infant girl has died after she was struck by a car driven by her mother in a tragic accident at Ocean Grove on Friday afternoon.
It’s understood the one-year-old was struck in the driveway of a property in Connewarre Place at 4.50pm.
Paramedics treated the girl at the scene where she died.
Victoria Police Acting Inspector Nicole Warner confirmed the death on Friday evening.
“Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following an incident involving a car and a pedestrian in Ocean Grove,” Inspector Warner said.
It’s understood the mother was assisting police with their inquiries.
A silver four-wheel-drive is believed to have been involved in the accident.
Distressed residents, believed to be family members, could be seen speaking to emergency workers at the scene.
One witness said the “tragic” scene had drawn much of the small, sleepy street of only eight houses out on to the road. “(A woman) collapsed, she was grief stricken and was being consoled by a man and ambulance officers,” the witness said. “The street was packed with lots of neighbours milling around everyone looking on in shock.”
The witness said there were about 15 police officers and three ambulances at the scene.
Late on Friday evening, Connewarre Place was blocked off with police tape as detectives continued their inquiries.
