TENNIS maverick Bernard Tomic has aced Melbourne’s party scene, spending $50,000 on what is touted as Australia’s most exclusive nightclub experience, just days after bombing out of the US Open.
BERNARD TOMIC BACK HIS PARTNER’S DREAMS
Tomic, 24, joined his girlfriend Emma Blake-Hahnel in Melbourne on Friday and, keen to catch up with mates, on Saturday night booked the $50,000 Green Room package at Melbourne’s leading celebrity nightspot, Bond nightclub.
Tomic is the first Australian to buy the package, which covers 25 guests and includes a helicopter ride over Melbourne, a private pre-club dinner, vintage Champagne, premium caviar, signature Bond cocktails, private security, and a personalised sound and lighting show on arrival at the club.
Tomic on Saturday confirmed he had purchased the extravagant night out.
He said while he understood some people might be shocked at him spending $50,000 on a party, it was money he had worked hard for and he could afford it.
“It is having fun and celebrating and maybe I just do it in different ways to other people,” Tomic said.
“I was not in Australia for 10 months and it is a chance to catch up with friends and (have) an enjoyable night.
“It ($50,000) might seem ridiculous to other people, but then again it is peanuts to me.
“When you have close to $14 million I think it only equals 0.36 per cent of what I am worth, so it is not a lot of money, but it might seem a lot to other people.”
Tomic’s knees-up will be his last before embarking on three weeks of training in Melbourne before hitting the tennis tour in Asia.
Just hours after touching down from the US he was spotted checking out Lamborghinis in Richmond.
“I was window shopping,” he said.
Tomic said while he had the luxury of wealth, he saw his good fortune as being the result of hard work rather than luck.
“I worked for this. People think I won the lotto, I did not win the lotto,” he said.
Tomic said he want to put the past year of ghastly disappointments, injuries and poor showings on the tennis court behind him and focus on getting his game back up to scratch.
“This year has been my worst year on tour,” he said.
“It has been not that great, but I have had good years on tour since I was 17 and I am only 24 so I have got the next eight to 10 years ahead of me.
“I have to respect these next few years and I have to work hard and it starts in Asia for me, so I have to get ready here for the next three weeks.
“I need to finish (the year) in the top 100 (he has slipped to 146 after the US Open), so that is my goal and maybe push in the next six months to get back to the top 30.”
He said he loved spending time in Melbourne.
“I wish that every tournament was played in Melbourne but that is not how it works, there are tournaments around the world and you have to travel.”
