US OPEN: BERNARD TOMIC, THOMAS KOKKINAKIS KNOCKED OUT
Blake-Hahnel has just settled here to forge her own career after travelling with Tomic for nearly two years.
The 21-year-old has her own manager and is working as a model while studying nutrition.
Tomic arrives in town on Friday after bowing out of the US Open and will spend the next three weeks in Melbourne.
“I’ve been following him everywhere so it’s time to do something for myself,’’ Blake-Hahnel said.
“He really wants me to do what makes me happy, which is good.
“At the start he was worried because he’s quite protective. He’s like, ‘OK we’ve been together a while and you can do what you want, babe’. It’s cute. If I want to go down this path I want to do it on my own.’’
Blake-Hahnel grew up in Geelong and moved to the city after finishing school.
She met Tomic after their paths crossed one night outside Crown casino. The Queenslander has been heavily criticised after his recent comments about tennis, but Blake-Hahnel says he is misunderstood.
“I feel like they (people) are definitely hard on him. He’s really misunderstood,’’ she said.
“When you know him like I do he’s a really funny, sweet guy. He just says things that come across that way and just defends himself. He’s not a politician. He doesn’t say things because we want to hear it. He just says what he thinks.
“He’s really sweet. I was 19 when I met him and didn’t know much about him.
“When you know him he’s just a different person.”
Blake-Hahnel is now represented by The Talent Buro and will attend tomorrow’s Memsie Stakes Day at Caulfield.
She said Tomic would continue training while in Melbourne and was in a good headspace. “It’s probably the longest we’ve gone without seeing each other, it’s about eight weeks,’’ she said.
“It’s at the point that we’ve been together long enough, if we have time apart it’s OK.”
