Good Friday Appeal 2018: Royal Children’s Hospital helps Oscar return home

WHEN Oscar Wells arrived into the world, his parents noticed barely-there holes in the front of each ear, just bigger than pin pricks. When the holes became infected, they turned to the Royal Children’s Hospital for help.

WHEN Oscar Wells arrived into the world, his parents studied every limb and inch of their newborn — their second son they had waited so long to meet.

Bree Prescott and Sam Wells noted his minuscule fingernails, his calm personality and the whiff of hair. They took in his striking eyes and alertness, and also the barely-there holes in the front of each ear, just bigger than pin pricks.

These tiny holes caused no problems for the first three months of Oscar’s life, before becoming infected for the first time.

It was then the Hastings family learnt these holes were preauricular sinuses. These pits marks were the opening of sinus tracts under the skin that shouldn’t be there.

They never cause any problems for many people who have them.

But for Oscar, a roundabout of antibiotics and infection over the past few months, most recently last week, led them to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

“They never bothered him. You can touch it. He’s always a happy baby,” Ms Prescott said.

After three nights in hospital and surgery during the week to clear the infection, Oscar is now home.

He will return to hospital in two months for a definitive operation to remove the pit.

“I’m glad it happened when he’s so young and we can get the tract removed so they hopefully never bother him again,” she said.
