The victim of a fatal stabbing in Adelaide’s northern suburbs on Thursday has been identified as 28-year-old Talulah Koopman.
Neighbours have described a “gut-wrenching scream” after an ugly alleged altercation between two women resulted in one being fatally stabbed at a house in Elizabeth East.
Locals living in the row of Housing Trust units on Bronte Cres, reported the incident to emergency services about 6.40pm.
Upon arrival, police found Ms Koopman with a critical stab wound in the chest.
She was taken to hospital where she later died.
Police arrested Maria Mpawenimana, 25, at the scene and charged her with murder.
She appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday via video link from court cells.
Counsel for Ms Mpawenimana made no bail application, while prosecutors told Magistrate Karim Soetratma forensic toxicology reports for the victim and accused wouldn’t be ready for five months.
The Davoren Park woman remained silent throughout the hearing.
On Friday morning, The Advertiser observed the home where the incident occurred and sighted what appeared to be pools of blood near the couch, which was located in the driveway.
Neighbour Kerry Greening told The Advertiser she made the triple-0 call fearing for her own safety and others.
“It was like a gut-wrenching scream,” Ms Greening said. “It was like a bellowing, horrific scream.
“I immediately knew something was horribly wrong because it didn’t resemble anything you’d normally hear during a party … that’s why I immediately called the police.
“Thank God the police got here quick – they were here in less than three minutes.”
Ms Greening said she often felt unsafe in her local street because of the frequent police visits and common arguments within the walls of neighbouring homes, which occasionally spilled over into the shared street.
Another neighbour, Issach Sube, said he was acquainted with the victim.
“She’s a good girl … she’s a very outgoing person, very genuine and a very nice person,” Mr Sube said.
Mr Sube said he was shocked by her death.
According to Mr Sube, the two women – who do not live on Bronte Cres – often came to visit their mutual friend on the street.
Police say the incident was not random and the two women were known to each other but ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
Mr Soetratma remanded Ms Mpawenimana in custody to face court again in November this year.
It was the second stabbing in Adelaide’s northern suburbs on the same day, after a 17-year-old boy allegedly stabbed an elderly man in an unrelated incident at nearby Surrey Downs, about 9.45am.
Police have urged anyone who may have witnessed either incident to call Crime Stoppers.
