A woman who was using her phone while driving with two children in the car blew more than six times the legal blood alcohol limit when she was pulled over, police say.

Police spotted a blue Mazda CX5 driving along Belair Rd at Lower Mitcham about 11.20am on Wednesday, and noticed the driver was using her mobile phone.

As patrols were following the car onto Grange Rd, they noticed the driver had failed to stop at a stop sign at the railway crossing.

The vehicle was eventually stopped and police spoke to the 45-year-old woman driving.

The Glengowrie woman took a breath test which returned with a positive result of 0.333 – nearly six times over the legal limit – police said.

Two passengers under the age of 16 were in the car at the time of the incident.

The woman was reported for using a mobile phone while driving, failing to stop or give way at a stop sign and drink driving with a child under 16 present.

Police issued the driver a 12-month immediate loss of licence and her car was impounded for 28 days.

She will be summoned to appear in court at a later date.
