A man who was charged with manslaughter has faced court over the death of an infant in July.

Police allege the seven-week-old male infant was taken to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital around 4pm on Wednesday, July 24, as a result of injuries sustained on that day at a northern suburbs address.

Six days later, the infant died from these injuries which prompted police to declare it a Major Crime the next day.

Following the investigation, Major Crime Investigation Branch detectives arrested a 50-year-old Parafield Gardens man on Wednesday and charged him with manslaughter.

Police will allege the man inflicted the injuries to the infant while in his care on the afternoon he was taken to hospital.

The man was charged with manslaughter and refused bail to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today.

Accused of unlawfully killing a 7-week-old boy, Shane John Marshall was silent via video link as he heard police needed months before they could finalise their case against him.

Mr Marshall, 50 of Parafield Gardens, has been charged with one count of manslaughter after the infant boy, whose identity has been kept secret by the court, died in hospital in July.

In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon, prosecutors said they would need at least four months to prepare their case against Mr Marshall.

Kate Opolski, for Mr Marshall, asked Magistrate Roderick Jensen to release her client on supervised bail.

With no opposition from prosecutors, Mr Jensen agreed he should be released from custody, due to the length he would likely spend on remand if the charges were taken to trial.

He ordered Mr Marshall be released on $1000 bail to his parent’s address, and obey conditions that he not contact certain people, and must report to corrections.

He will return to court in January.
