Melbourne premiership hero Christian Petracca will showcase his cooking skills, inspired by his Italian upbringing, at the Adelaide Central Market on Friday.
The Melbourne superstar will share his recipe for spaghetti and meatballs in a live cooking demonstration with Tasting Australia’s Mandy Hall at 3pm.
“I’m excited to demonstrate my love of cooking to the locals at the iconic Adelaide Central Market and share my tips and tricks in the kitchen,” Petracca said.
The Demons superstar is a fan favourite on social media, where he has 375,000 followers on his Instagram account and regularly posts recipes inspired by his Italian background and fitness regime.
During the appearance, Petracca will reveal how he learned to make rich Italian sauces from his mother and Nonna.
Petracca said he can’t wait to head to Adelaide for Gather Round, which kicks off on Thursday with the Crows v Melbourne clash at Adelaide Oval.
“There’s so much happening across the city which is just a stone’s throw away from Adelaide Oval, and the atmosphere is really buzzing,” he said.
KANE CORNES LACES UP FOR FOOTY FIGHT NIGHT
He doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to his football analysis, but Kane Cornes is facing a tougher task in the boxing ring next week.
The polarising SEN radio pundit will battle it out against The Footy Show’s Nathan Brown as part of The Gathering, a series of celebrity bouts in Adelaide next Wednesday ahead of AFL’s Gather Round.
And an SA real estate agency is tipping the Power’s 300-game star might struggle in the ring, paying to advertise on the soles of his shoes.
Mike Dobbin, owner and director of Magain Real Estate, said he was hoping Cornes would secure victory but wanted to take advantage if he gets knocked out.
“As a proud South Australian Company we really want Kane to win this fight . but we also understand that possibly 85 per cent of Australia would like to see him end up on his backside,” he said.
“If that was to happen, then the soles of his shoes could be a prime piece of advertising real estate, and you know what they say about real estate . location, location, location.”
The Gathering, at the Adelaide 36ers Arena in Findon, will see a host of retired AFL players including Dane Swan, Anthony Rocca, Mitch Robinson and Dale Thomas, fight against each other, on the same card as six professional bouts.
Cornes said he was pleased to have Magain’s support but he’s planning to make sure no one will get to see their logo.
“There’s a lot of people that want to see the bottom of my shoes on Wednesday, but I’m hoping I stay on my feet and no one see’s their branding,” he said.
The footy bouts include Mitch Robinson vs. Kayne Pettifer, Anthony Rocca vs. Corey McKernan, and Dane Swan vs. Dale Thomas.
It will be screened on Stan and tickets are available at events.ticketbooth.com.au
MACCA’S FOOTY FESTIVAL RETURNS
A battle of the bands competition plus live performances from top local acts, including Motez and George Alice, headline the return of a four-day festival on the Riverbank during next month’s Gather Round.
The 150m long zip line across the River Torrens is also coming back as part of the Macca’s Footy Festival which will run from Thursday, April 4, to Sunday, April 7, when all 18 AFL clubs descend on SA for the round 4 extravaganza.
A host of emerging musicians will take to the stage for the competition, hoping to secure a spot alongside Jet and Baker Boy at the inaugural Gather Live concert following the final match between Collingwood and Hawthorn.
The free four-day festival will be held at Elder Park, within walking distance of Adelaide Oval where five of the nine games will be played.
All nine matches of Gather Round will be shown live on a new super screen at the event while AFL and AFLW players will be appearing throughout the festival to meet and greet fans.
Budding footy stars can hone their talents in the NAB AFL Auskick Fun Zone which will have free skills stations, photo moments, and giveaways, while fans of all ages can take part in the Footy Festival Scavenger Hunt for a chance to win a range of prizes.
There will be a host of other free activities, plus food trucks and licensed bars.
AFL customer and commercial executive general manager Kylie Rogers said the Elder Park site will be the ideal place to soak up the Gather Round atmosphere.
“This year’s Macca’s Footy Festival is shaping up to be bigger than ever before, with more free activities and entertainment available for event goers of all ages to enjoy,” she said.
Tickets are still available for just two of the nine Gather Round games after fans had their last chance to snap up tickets on Thursday to the previously sold-out round.
An AFL spokesperson confirmed all remaining tickets have sold out to the nine games – except for two Sunday matches, Collingwood vs. Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval and Gold Coast Suns vs. GWS Giants in Mt Barker.
A limited number of tickets to those matches are still available via Ticketek.
It comes as Port Adelaide stars Charlie Dixon and Lachie Jones have announced they will face-off in an exhibition drag race at The Bend on April 7, just two days after the Power’s Gather Round clash against Essendon.
The revheads will reach speeds of up to 175km/h when they compete against each other in the event, which will be part of the Riverbend Nationals Top Fuel drag racing weekend from April 5-7.
“I’m super pumped. Any chance you get to go down the strip is always good fun,” said Dixon, who owns several cars and hostsa FIVEaa radio show, Drivin’ With Dixon, covering all things motoring.
“I’m pretty excited to come out here. It’s definitely a passion of mine so I can’t wait.”
Jones said he’s “stoked to be a part of it”.
“I’ve always loved cars but Charlie’s talked me in to more of the drag racing scene,” he said.
“I’ve watched a few top fuelers on TV but not in person yet, so I’m absolutely stoked to be a part of it.”
The footy duo will be racing in underpowered street cars which can reach up to 175km/h in a best-of-three “grudge match.
Shell V-Power Motorsport Park chief executive Alistair MacDonald said the event, which will be held a safe, controlled environment, will be an exciting addition to the weekend’s racing.
“It’ll be good fun. Drag racing is … sport meets entertainment. It’ll be a fantastic Saturday and Sunday for those that have had their footy fix with the Power and Crows,” he said.
The Bend will also become a Festival of Footy live site throughout the event with the Gather Round action playing live on TV screens around the venue.
Visitors to this year’s Gather Round will be able to see and feel every moment of the festival with or without a match ticket at various events, including player appearances, team activations and open training sessions.
Aussie indie rockers The Temper Trap will entertain crowds at the Norwood Food and Wine Festival, which has returned as part of the four-day footy feast.
Tourism minister Zoe Bettison said Gather Round had become a major standout on the state’s events calendar.
“The scale, crowds, atmosphere, and demand of AFL Gather Round in 2023 were enormous and it will once again provide a massive benefit to South Australia’s visitor economy this April,” she said.
“With South Australia’s reputation to deliver world-class events, I am certain there will be no hesitation from fans to get the limited release of tickets going on sale today.
“I encourage anyone who might miss out on tickets to the matches to get out and enjoy the stacked line-up of Gather Round events throughout our city, world-class wine regions, stunning tourism destinations and more.”
The inaugural AFL Gather Round in 2023 contributed more than $83 million to the South Australian economy and saw 268,000 fans attend matches including more than 40,000 people from interstate.
