The St Mary’s women have seen off the difficult challenge of Palmerston to extend their winning streak to four games.

The 8.13 (61) to 2.5 (17) defeat of a fellow top four side showed the Saints side are ready to take the next step in their journey up the table as they confirmed their spot in the top three.

The side broke free early and only an inaccurate second quarter let them down from scoring in each term.

Nakeesaha Minter was the standout in front of goal for Saints with two in a side that enjoyed sharing the ball around.

It was the efforts of the likes of Paula Pavic in the ruck battle or through the middle as well as Ciaralii Parnell and Billie Byers that kept the momentum up.

In front of goal it was Natasha Medbury who scored both of the Magpies as they struggled to assert themselves against the Saints well setup defence, which included former Magpie Janet Baird.

Third-placed Palmerston will put their 4-1 record on the line against fourth-placed St Mary’s (3-2) in a big clash on Saturday afternoon.

This match will have plenty of bearing on the makeup of finals by season’s end with the side’s jostling for position behind undefeated rivals PINT and Nightcliff.

Saints are currently on a three game winning streak after a slow start to the season and are coming into form as they do.

The likes of Billie Byers and Janet Baird have been among their top performers so far while young gun Shakalia Gardiner-Dunn is racking up goals befitting her last name.

Palmerston’s Taelah Smith is another young player who hasn’t been shy in front of goal this year with 12 already to her name.

The home field advantage is another factor the Magpies will be clinging on to as they continue to build into a formidable, young side.
