St Mary’s found a way to survive a huge scare coming back from a 30 point deficit to defeat the free-flowing but inaccurate Tiwi Bombers late in the piece.
The Tiwi Bombers burst out of the blocks in the heat and had all the running reminiscent of their early ascendancies of recent weeks.
But crucially they were their own worst enemies in front of goal, and another big performance from Dylan Landt helped St Mary’s hold to win 11.8 (74) to 9.19 (73).
Tiwi had all the running early breezing out to an early lead on the back of their recent run of form and their free-flowing style out of the midfield.
The experienced heads of former AFL players Sam Darley and Marlion Pickett through the middle gave their men up forward plenty to work with.
Anthony Munkara with a couple of quick snaps gave his side early ascendency, and then Malachi Walley showed himself as a steady target for his side up forward.
The Bombers, however, would be kicking themselves for their misses born out of their natural run and gun style that allowed Saints to stay in the contest.
Though Brayden Rioli and Brendan Kantilla were both still able to nail a major from almost nothing to strengthen the margin.
Saints issues were in part born out of a lock down job on their main goal scorer Jackson Calder by Tanner Blackney-Noter who spoiled at the contest.
It meant Saints had to create goals from different avenues and required the likes of Xavier Vallejo and Mitch Musgrove to take the initiative.
Skipper Dylan Landt was the lynchpin for the Green Machine playing across the ground whether in defensive roles down back or in his usual role through the middle.
And with goals hard to come by he was also required to burst forward becoming one of Saints leading goal scorer for the game, even scoring a screamer from an angle.
Tiwi’s momentum faded as the game wore on in the extreme heat and gradually the Green Machine got into the grips with the game.
Jack Landt through the middle created chances while former West Coast player Connor West, in his NTFL debut imposed himself too.
Calder came into the game late in the piece and was finally able to get his hands on the ball to boot some crucial goals.
It was a sure sign of the shifting momentum, and a Beau Tedcastle major followed by a Calder clincher gave Saints the lead for the first time since they had scored the first point.
Tiwi tried to move it out of their zone, but tired legs and Saints ability to disrupt late sealed the deal for last year’s premiers.
“It’s amazing to get the four points as Tiwi have been flying,” Landt said.
“We saw they got off to a strong start last week and Nightcliff pegged them back, so when they got the jump on us we knew we were still in and had to fight it out to the end.
“They kept us in it so we just had to take it on and took advantage of space through the corridor, the message late was just to get in quick and go for it.
“For Champ (Calder) we needed to kick to his advantage, if you get the ball there he’ll mark a few as he’s pretty hard to beat one out, and for him to have kicked the winner under so much pressure speaks volumes of him.
“We had a pretty inexperienced side with no fly-ins and some guys out, so for our younger guys to get a shot at the second placed side and for us to do well was a great experience.”

The Tiwi Bombers are out to beat their second of last year’s grand finalists in as many weeks when they take on reigning premiers St Mary’s.
And the NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of the clash from 4pm on Saturday.
The Bombers have won as many games in the opening five rounds as they did for the entirety of last NTFL season, and will add more before the year is done.
The question is will win number five come from this encounter with the reigning premiers, a side they beat in their last meeting when they were ahead when lightning disrupted the game.
The Bombers were missing Sam Darley in their win against Nightcliff – and will be an improved side with his inclusion – while Brendan Kantilla, Marlion Pickett and Michael Thompson have been other standouts.
Following the victory over the Tigers, new Bomber Braedon McLean said it had instilled great confidence in their ability to match the competition’s top sides.
“To have that belief to work for each other and be mature, we can challenge any team,” he said.
Saints for their part will want a strong showing after being slightly off the boil in recent weeks with a loss to Waratah, and a scrappy but convincing win against Wanderers.
Dylan Landt will be one man looking for more space out of the middle to combat their quick opposition, while Jackson Calder will be at the ready to add to his goals topping the tally as is.
