Replay: St Mary's v Tiwi Bombers—2024-25 NTFL Round 6

It doesn’t get any tastier than this.

Fresh off the bye, unbeaten ladder leaders Southern Districts take on second place St Mary’s in a Saturday prime time blockbuster at TIO Stadium.

The Crocs have put together six wins on the trot, but with both of last year’s grand finalists lying in wait over the next two weeks, they face a real test of their title aspirations.

Saints keep proving their ability to find wins from difficult positions. One of their best was back in round 6 when they rallied from 17-point three-quarter time deficit to beat Tiwi Bombers by one point.

The day begins with PINT’s chance to make up some ground on the five teams in front of them when they take on Wanderers at DXC Arena.

The Greenants are always a difficult side to play at home and, in the 3.30pm clash, will be hoping they can pull out a win against the Muk Muks.

Then it’s out to Cazalys Arena from 4pm where the Palmerston Magpies take on Nightcliff.

Palmerston have had a tough run of late, losing heavily to the top two teams, and they now face a fired-up Tigers outfit bolstered by the return of captain Ryan Nyhuis.

At the same time over at TIO Stadium is the women’s clash between St Mary’s and Southern Districts - and the Crocs know they need something to get back in the finals conversation.

Saints have improved each week and have cemented their spot in the top three, but if Crocs reclaim their early season form this could turn into a real scrap.

Finally, it’s over to Gardens Oval from 7.30pm for a Waratah homecoming against winless Darwin Buffaloes.

In a strange twist, the Double Blues have actually played on this ground more recently than the home side, but that may be their only advantage with Tahs’ pressure game looking the real deal.

ROUND 8

Bottom sides Wanderers and the Darwin Buffaloes each have an opportunity to claim a rare win when they clash to open NTFL Round 7 on Friday night.

The eighth and ninth-ranked sides will face off at Gardens Oval from 7pm – one of five games live and exclusive on the NT News and KommunityTV across the weekend.

Wanderers have shown signs of promise in their win against Palmerston and early on against St Mary’s and Nightcliff, but have yet to claim a second victory this season.

For the Buffaloes, it is also a chance to get back on track after a winless start to the campaign and they will hope to snap a five-game losing run coming off the bye.

Then, on Saturday, St Mary’s make the trip out to Cazalys Arena to take on the Palmerston Magpies in a bid to further cement their top three position from 3pm.

Saints held on to beat Tiwi by a single point last week and go in as huge favourites against a Palmerston outfit still licking their wounds from a hammering at the hands of Southern Districts.

The Tiwi Bombers will be on bounce back watch as they take on Waratah at TIO Stadium from 5pm, in what will be a must-watch match.

Waratah have some of the best defenders in the competition and they will be put to the test against the fast and free-flowing Bombers.

Then, it’s back to Cazalys Arena where the St Mary’s and Palmerston women will go head to head in a thrilling face-off from 5.30pm.

Both sides appear destined to make it into finals, and this match will have a bearing on where they end up in the top five.

Finally, from 6.30pm, it’s PINT and the Nightcliff Tigers at DXC Arena.

The Greenants will be hoping home ground advantage works in their favour, while the Tigers surged late last round to pile on the points against Wanderers and will be banking on their big game players to get them across the line.

ROUND 6

PINT’s perfect start to the women’s NTFL season could continue as they take on a Waratah outfit desperately needing a victory in live streamed Round 6 action from 12pm on Saturday.

The Queenants’ title defence has yet to hit a loss, while the Tahs, an historically great women’s outfit, have yet to get on the road properly so far this season setting up an interesting clash.

The Men’s Premier League once again tips off with perhaps the most exciting fixture as last year’s premiers St Mary’s take on the confident Tiwi Bombers.

Last time these sides met was in a match on Bathurst Island that was called off early because of the lightning rule, allowing Tiwi to take the slender six point win.

It’s something Saints will hope to avoid when they clash again in the 4pm match at TIO Stadium, but they know they’ll need to be on their game to see off the resurgent Tiwi.

The Bombers have won as many games in the opening five rounds as they did all last season, and with one of last year’s grand finalists already beaten they can make it a set this weekend.

At the same time is the Norbuilt Oval face-off between Southern Districts and the Palmerston Magpies, which the Crocs will be hoping to draw some percentage points from.

Districts have been an undeniable force this season, and while Palmerston have shown sparks of what they’re capable of, they will need to have a near-perfect game to beat the form side.

Then at 6.30pm we return to TIO Stadium for what should be a strong fixture between Waratah and PINT.

Both sides pulled off crucial victories in their most recent matches and will be throwing everything at this one to carry on that recent momentum.

Finally, it’s over to Nightcliff Oval, in a match also played at 6.30pm for a clash between the home team Tigers and Wanderers.

Nightcliff may have lost to Tiwi last week, but a return home, where all their wins this season have come from, could again change their fortune.

But Wanderers, who are coming off a loss of their own, are starting to show signs of the side they could be with some big performers among their outfit.

ROUND 5

It may not be a trip to the islands, but the Tiwi Bombers will still bring the fire in their round opening fixture against the Nightcliff Tigers.

The two top five sides will clash at Gardens Oval in both the men’s and women’s competition, after travel concerns forced the double header to be relocated from the islands.

The women will face off from 2pm with Tiwi having impressed plenty in their triumph over the Darwin Buffaloes in last week’s AFLW curtain raiser.

Maria Rioli, the daughter of NT football legend Maurice Rioli, is expected to lead an exciting Bombers side, though they face a tough challenge in the Nightcliff Tigers.

The Tigers women are undefeated this season and have a lethal weapon up front in the form of Cassie McWilliam, who kicked four goals in her last outing.

The men’s Premier League sides will clash from 4pm, with the Bombers coming off a strong finish against the Darwin Buffaloes to remain in second on the table.

Nightcliff are not a side that will just let them stay there and, coming off the bye, should have taken another step in sorting out any problems they may have.

It’s then over to TIO Stadium where the Palmerston Magpies will take on PINT from 4.30pm, with both sides eager to make it a second win for the season.

The Greenants have the momentum having kept pace with current ladder-leaders Southern Districts for most of last week’s clash, while the Magpies struggled against a rejuvenated Wanderers.

The Muk Muks, fresh off that win over the Magpies, will clash with reigning premiers St Mary’s from 7pm in the second of the TIO Stadium doubleheader.

Wanderers will want to make an impression, but the Green Machine is hurting after last round’s loss and will want to get back in the winner’s circle as soon as possible.

The action then rounds out with a Sunday afternoon clash between the winless Darwin Buffaloes and undefeated Southern Districts.

While on paper it appears to be a tough day in the office for the Buffaloes at Cazalys Arena, history has proven the clashes between the two clubs have a tendency to go down to the wire.

It makes for a must-watch weekend of NTFL action.

ROUND 4

Another huge week of footy is on the way, with the clash between the two most recent NTFL premiers on Friday night an undoubted highlight.

Every men’s Premier League match and the match of the round from the NTFL women’s Premier League, this week it’s the Tiwi Bombers v Darwin Buffettes - will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV and the NT News.

Last season’s champs St Mary’s face Waratah, the 2022-23 title winners, at Gardens Oval in the 7.30pm Friday match.

Saints are still undefeated following a strong showing against PINT last weekend. They are getting some key contributions from some former VFL talent, including last year’s Chaney medallist Joel Garner.

Waratah, on the other hand, were beaten by a late Nightcliff surge, and though there won’t be panic stations yet, they will be desperate to get back to winning ways.

Check the full LIVE STREAM schedule below.

Also on Friday night, from 8pm, is another Palmerston-hosted match at Cazalys Arena, this time against Wanderers.

Palmerston broke their 20-month win drought last week, and will hope to turn that into some momentum on their home turf.

Due the AFLW Dreamtime match at TIO Stadium, there is an early start to the Saturday action. First-up it’s Tiwi Bombers up against the Darwin Buffaloes from 11.30am at DXC Arena.

The Bombers were gutsy in their defeat to Southern Districts in round three and will look to bounce back against a side trying to prevent a slide of their own.

PINT, who have lost their last two matches heavily, face an unenviable task of trying to knock overt Southern Districts in the 2pm DXC match.

Finally, it’s the women’s match at TIO Oval 2 from 3.45pm.

The Buffettes were close to running down reigning premiers PINT in Round 1, but three weeks later remain without a win, could this be the one?

ROUND 3

Footy fans are in for a treat in Round 3 with two of the league’s best sides on current form set to clash in the weekend’s opener.

Every men’s Premier League match and the match of the round from the NTFL women’s Premier League will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV and the NT News.

The Tiwi Bombers and Southern Districts have lit up the NTFL so far this season with two wins each, off the back of some huge offseason signings.

But now they come up against each other in a blockbuster round opener from 7.30pm on Friday night at Gardens Oval.

Marlion Pickett was everywhere, including the ruck, for the Bombers in a best on ground Round 2 showing and will be determined to turn it on against a premiership-favourite Crocs outfit.

Districts also made it two from two with a more than convincing win against Wanderers, in which Jed Anderson, Matt Shannon and Steven Motlop were among the top performers.

The clash is part of a massive Friday night double header in Round 3, with Palmerston Magpies hosting the Darwin Buffaloes in the other half of the double act.

Both sides are hunting their first win of the season in the match at Cazalys Arena from 8pm.

On Saturday, we head to TIO Oval 2, with the main stadium currently unable to be played on in preparation for the AFLW game.

Reigning premiers St Mary’s return from their bye round to take on a PINT side hurting after a heavy loss in the 4pm clash.

Then it’s the women’s turn from 6.30pm in what will be a grand final rematch.

The Saints will have revenge on their mind against the side that beat them in the big dance, but the result could take on more importance than that after their winless start to the NTFL Women Premier League season.

The Queenantsare two-from-two to start the year despite some offseason changes and will be a sure challenge for their opposition.

Finally, it’s over to Nightcliff Oval where hosts Nightcliff will take on Waratah from 6.30pm with both sides claiming their first victory in Round 2.

Waratah scored 14 goals straight against Palmerston to get theirs while Nightcliff pulled through against Buffaloes, despite making it difficult on themselves in front of goal.

ROUND 2

The NTFL will enter Round 2 with some key matchups on the cards, including the first appearance of the season for the Palmerston men and women.

After narrowly missing out on finals last season, the Magpies women start their 2024-25 campaign against Waratah at TIO Stadium from 12pm on Saturday.

It is one of five clashes on a big day of NTFL action with every match broadcast live and exclusive on The NT News and KommunityTV.

Palmerston have plenty of young guns to show off including last season’s rising star Marika Carlton, but they come against a Tahs unit wanting to bounce back from an opening loss.

Southern Districts will play their first home game of the season with the Crocs’ impressive lineup set to take on Wanderers at Norbuilt Oval from 4pm.

Districts showed off their side complete with the likes of ex-AFL talents Jarrod Brander, Jed Anderson and Steven Motlop in a Round 1 defeat of Waratah, and will seek to continue that momentum.

Then it’s back to TIO Stadium where the Palmerston men will play their first game of the 2024-25 season, against a Tahs outfit looking for a quick response to their opening loss from 4.30pm.

The Magpies didn’t win a match last season, but new leadership including coach Mark Tyrrell and captain Shaun Wilson could lead the side to some success this time around.

Nightcliff also get their first home fixture of the year hosting a Darwin Buffaloes side with signs of promise at Nightcliff Oval at 6pm.

The Tigers will be focused on their goal kicking this time around after struggling with the sweaty ball last week, but know they have the side to get the ball where they need it to be.

Finally, the super Saturday of NTFL will see PINT take on the Tiwi Bombers at TIO Stadium from 7pm with both sides coming off strong wins in their opening encounters.

The Bombers had their best season opener in many years where big ins such as Marlion Pickett mixed it with the likes of Brendan Kantilla and Anthony Munkara to find success.

The Greenants also enjoyed a positive start where Chris Nield impressed in front of goal in his return and former Carlton player Lochie O’Brien had a best on ground showing.

ROUND 1

The NTFL is just hours away from returning for what promises to be another thrilling year, and the NT News will once again be your one stop shop to watch every Premier League match live.

The NT News and KommunityTV have brought you every minute of the Men’s Premier League for the past four seasons and that won’t change for season 2024-25.

There will be plenty of action from the women’s side too with full and exclusive coverage of one match from the senior women’s division every week.

- ALL THE INS AND OUTS

Several former AFL players will take centre stage namely Richmond premiership player Marlion Pickett, who has signed for the Tiwi Bombers, and the likes of Jed Anderson and Jarrod Brander.

Then there’s a plenty of talent that has ripped it up in recent years such as two-time Nichols medal winner Dylan Landt and Buffaloes captain Jarrod Stokes.

This season gets under way with a grand final rematch between reigning premiers St Mary’s and the Nightcliff Tigers, who will be hungry for some early revenge.

That match is on October 4 from 8pm at TIO Stadium and promises to be a belter to kick off what is shaping up to be an interesting season.

Then on the Saturday the women’s reigning premiers PINT will take on a Darwin Buffettes outfit eager to return to the top of the table themselves from 12pm.

Back to back men’s games are to follow in what will complete a super Saturday of sorts to get the new season under way.

The Tiwi Bombers will take on Wanderers from 2pm, with plenty of eyes on the former who recently signed former Wanderers captain Braedon McLean.

Then from 4.30pm we have PINT vs the Darwin Buffaloes, two sides who have had a change of coach during the offseason and will be playing their first games under new direction.

Waratah are another side with a change of coach with Rick Nolan taking the reins ahead of their first match of the year against Southern Districts from 7pm.

These are the sides that contested the 2022-23 grand final and both are hunting a strong early impression to get back into the big dance this time around.

The Palmerston Magpies will get their campaign under way in Round 2.

Head of AFLNT Sam Gibson said he looked forward to the continued partnership with NT News for the 2024-25 NTFL Season.
