Southern Districts were never in doubt against a fresh faced and inexperienced Wanderers, keeping their winning start to the season alive.
The talk of the off-season, the Crocs proved, for the second week in a row, they are the real deal this season and this result will surely put the rest of the field on notice.
The contest was all but over by the end of the third, the Crocs compounded the hurt in the final quarter to claim victory in a 21.18 (144) to 9.6 (60) scoreline.
Districts hit the ground running, getting out to an early lead, but the Wanderers looked up for the challenge.
Matt Shannon was brilliant through the middle for the Crocs with his smooth deliveries to his forwards crucial to gather early momentum.
And with the likes of Jed Anderson, Jarrod Brander and Will Farrer roaming around the forward line the path to goal was an easy one.
Notwithstanding the 84 point mauling, the Eagles showed their fair share of promise during the match.
Their ability to contain Districts inside their own 50 for long periods of time impressed, with the likes of Davin Ferreira and Jak Trewin frequently in the action.
Meanwhile, big man Cody Leggett and Simon Bates got into the heads of the Crocs with their gutsy efforts in defence.
Unfortunately for them, but fortunately for Districts, their lack of respect for the Sherrin and frequent errors gifted Districts a multitude of ‘get out of jail free’ cards in defence.
Matthew Mazzini was at his best in the backline for the Crocs and Steven Motlop had his fair share of quality moments at the back too.
Districts ultimately won the game through the middle with the duo of Anderson and Shannon running circles around the Muk Muks middles.
Jarrod Brander was solid but surprisingly lost his touch in the second half, leading 18-year-old Daniel Murphy and Will Farrer to do the scoring in his stead.
“We’ve built already from what we put together last week and what we’d been training for all pre-season,” Shannon said.
“We had a lot of the ball and played Crocs footy, but we also had to work hard at the back.
“It’s Round 2 so we’re still smoothing out the edges and figuring out the modes, when to go, when to stay back and we were very controlled at times but we also had bad turnovers and a number of missed moments up front (scoring chances).”
The addition of Steven Motlop at the back was another area of the match Shannon was understandably chuffed with.
“Stevie’s great,” he said.
“He is giving us a lot in the back and he’s also giving those other guys with him back there a lot of confidence.
“Whether he’s clearing it out for our big boys to fly for the mark up the middle or setting up the smaller guys with quick plays, he’s already been such a great asset for this team.”
