Tweed Shire Council is looking for a helmsman to steer the ship at a cafe in the spruced up Captain Cook Memorial and Lighthouse at Point Danger on the Queensland-New South Wales border.

It comes as the iconic headland crowning Tweed Heads and Coolangatta and overlooking popular Duranbah beach is rapidly changing.

The heritage listed Captain Cook site on the headland is currently undergoing a $7.5 million dollar revamp, including new public toilets and a gallery in the cafe area.

The memorial was jointly constructed in 1971 by City of Gold Coast, Tweed council and the Commonwealth Department of Shipping and Transport to mark the 200th anniversary of Captain James Cook’s voyage along the east coast of Australia on the HMS Endeavour.

The building was extended back in 1990 to house the local Volunteer Marine Rescue NSW.

Defects and the cost of maintenance paved the way for the upgrade.

Just over the road, a stone’s throw away, the contentious 12-storey $48 million Awaken project is currently under construction by Gold Coast developer S & S Projects at 275 Boundary St.

Construction on the memorial upgrade started in mid-November 2022 and is expected to be completed by mid-December 2023, weather permitting.

The council has now issued a call for a cafe operator.

“Are you ready to be part of history and serve up a slice of paradise?” the council states on social media.

“This historic and iconic site – perched atop the stunning Point Danger headland and straddling the NSW-Qld border – offers stunning views of the Tweed/Gold Coast coastline.

The council is chasing “visionary organisations to become stewards of this community treasure”.

“If you’re passionate about hospitality and history, this is your chance,” the council states.

“We’re looking for someone who can offer innovative ideas, exceptional service, quality cuisine and a welcoming atmosphere.

“Your vision can help create a vibrant cafe experience that complements this magical site.”

The expression of interest announcement, which reveals a closing date of 12pm on September 20, includes a link to tender information on the council website.

The Awaken project – which comes as concept plans for a huge $900 million redevelopment of Tweed Mall at Tweed Heads into a new “precinct” over the next decade have been aired – comes amid a development boom on the Gold Coast, and particularly in the south of the city.

The ritzy Point Danger build has already set a record penthouse sale price for the Coolangatta area of $8.15 million.

The opulent project boasting whole-floor units is being erected on the former site of bustling little Cafe Dbar, which is tipped to reopen in Awaken.

In June, S & S Projects lodged another development application for a $140m, 13-storey apartment tower overlooking Duranbah Beach next to the Awaken project, on the corner of Boundary and Petrie streets

It would be the developer’s fourth build in the suburb following the recently completed $90m Flow Residences, once the $140m Esprit and $48m Awake towers are polished off.

Just down the road Brisbane design firm Joe Adsett Architects has started construction on the $100 million Rockpool Rainbow Bay, a high rise with 21 luxury apartments, boasting ocean views over Snapper Rocks and Rainbow Bay.
