TikTok stars Ginger and Carman on ageing, fashion, and freedom

‘Un-retired’ fashion influencers Ginger and Carman open up about becoming TikTok stars over the age of 60, and why their senior years are the very best fun.

Meet Ginger and Carman, the stylish Aussie duo owning TikTok

Posting under the pseudonyms, Ginger and Carman, a pair of Melbourne-based friends have amassed over 300K TikTok followers and 8 million likes by documenting their well dressed “escapades”, which started with a girls’ trip to Paris.

Their first TikTok – an elegant parking garage fashion show – amassed over one million likes, with the top comment being ‘If this isn’t me and my best friend in the future, then I don’t want it’. Confidential couldn’t agree more.

The stylish duo have been friends for 8 years, having met through their kids’ school, and call themselves “un-retired”.

“We call them escapades because they’re unplanned little journeys,” Carman explained. “We don’t know where we’re going, or when we’re going. It’s refreshing to finally be able to do that after all these years of deadlines and family obligations.”

Ginger added: “Life doesn’t have to be over at 60. You can go off and have your career, and your kids, and have a lovely time, and be married, but still be you. And go and have fun with your girlfriends.”

Case in point: They’re cover girls for Westfield and InStyle Australia’s Spring/Summer campaign, which is all about creativity and self-expression.

“We believe in living from inside out, rather than outside in. You stop taking on what society’s telling you to be. You aren’t invisible because you’re rocking your stuff,” Ginger said.

Carman: “And owning it.”

The pair reject the idea that getting older means you have to dress, or act a certain way, or be sat at home in boredom waiting for the kids to call.

Documenting their creative cocktail “explorations” and op-shopping trips has been a way to “re-emerge as the people (they) once were”.

“It’s reconnecting to the fun part of ourselves that we lose along the way. You forget to have fun and to go out and explore and try new things, and it’s so important,” Carman said.

They hope they’re giving other women, of all ages, permission to do the same.
