Who gets the friends after a break-up may be one of the oldest questions in the book, but it’s one pop singer Cari Fletcher wishes fans would stop arguing over since she released the messy hit “Becky’s So Hot”, about her famous ex’s new partner.
On her first visit Down Under, the 28-year-old opened up about her intentions behind the song that sparked the explosive online saga captivating TikTok.
For the uninitiated, Fletcher was once in a highly-public relationship with Shannon Beveridge, a popular photographer and YouTube star.
After they broke up, Fletcher wrote The S(ex) Tapes album, about Beveridge, and enlisted her to film its music videos.
Nearly two years later, Beveridge is dating Becky Missal.
On July 13, Fletcher shared this song preview to TikTok: “Are you in love like we were? / If I were you I’d probably keep her. Makes me wanna hit her when I see her / ‘Cause Becky’s so hot in your vintage T-shirt.”
Rumours swirled that it was a PR stunt, or a collaboration. Beveridge’s TikTok denying it was either, and saying “no one asked permission,” garnered one million views. She also tweeted: “An empath would never”.
“It’s caused quite a commotion,” Fletcher told Confidential, the morning after her electric gig at Sydney’s Roundhouse Theatre.
“I was creeping on my ex’s new girlfriend when I was in the studio. She had posted a photo wearing an old vintage T-shirt of my ex’s, and it’s one that I’ve worn before as well. And I accidentally liked the picture.
“I was like f***, f***, f***. And then thought, you know what? I’m going to own the fact that I did this. I can’t even be mad about it, because she looks so hot in the shirt, hotter than I ever did.”
Adding, she gave Beveridge a heads up about the song prior to its release, and offered to send the music to her.
The name Becky is a well-known musical trope for the other woman. “I felt like this was the most handed to me song concept I could’ve ever been given,” Fletcher explained. “It’s really not that deep.”
“I also don’t want to f*** anyone’s girlfriend. It’s art. It’s dramatic. I’m a Pisces, and someone who’s intrigued by talking about the things that people are like, um, should we not say that?”
Nonetheless, various celebrity friends of the former couple unfollowing each other on Instagram, and reacting to the song has only added fuel to the fire. Ask any queer woman whether she’s ‘Team Shannon’ or ‘Team Fletcher’ and she’ll have an answer.
“I can’t stand the teams thing,” Fletcher said. “I don’t have a bad feeling in my body. This has never been about who’s better or who’s hotter.”
“It’s me acknowledging the complicated process of an ex moving on and all the weird s*** that comes with that. It’s way more nuanced than people want to make it.
“There are no teams. In that sense, people have written my narrative for me. That’s not my energy.”
That said: “Once I date somebody, you are forever my muse. Just a PSA.”
Fletcher stopped her sold-out Sydney show to get water to a fan who passed out during one of her most “sexual, hot,” songs. And also said Aussies have a special place in her heart, despite them “bullying” and “booing” her until she did a shoey on stage.
“I’ve wanted to come here since I was a kid, and the fact that I did for the first time, on a sold-out tour, is an absolutely wild, pinch-me kind of thing.”
