Missy Higgins’ outback performance at the Mundi Mundi Bash was special in more ways than one.
While the top Aussie singer did her own headline slot at the festival that kicked off near Broken Hill last night, Higgins also scored a backing vocal credit, surprising fans by joining Midnight Oil on stage.
“They were short a couple backing vocalists for various reasons, and asked if they could borrow mine,” Higgins told The Daily Telegraph.
“I was like ‘Hang on, I want to do it too. It’s a bit of a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to be a backup singer, and I’m a massive fan of theirs.”
“To be honest, I haven’t been practising my own songs at all. I’ve been learning theirs.”
Higgins sang five Midnight Oil songs, and also performed Bones Hilman’s part of One Country.
Hilman died of cancer in November 2020.
The Scar singer was also joined by the Wilcannia Central School Choir, whose teacher Sarah Donnelley was named ARIA Music School Teacher of the Year in 2020.
“I watched a video about how amazingly she led these kids through the pandemic. We need more people like her, and the choir lives not too far from Broken Hill.”
“So I wanted them to jump up on stage and sing one of my new songs, Big Kids,” she said.
“It’s always really quite special playing these dessert gigs, because you’re out in the middle of nowhere with thousands of strangers.”
The Mundi Mundi Bash runs over three days until tomorrow night with the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Jon Stevens, Kasey Chambers, Sarah McLeod and Daryl Braithwaite also on the line-up.
